Narrative
From his son HVJ :
Regimental Sargeant Major in WWI.
In Signal Corps (Air Force), in Rommeranten (sp), France. In the Aero construction battalion, putting together Spads. Offered a chance to become a pilot but turned it down. At the time they would let you taxi around in a Spad with the ends of the wings cut off. When you felt ready, you'd get a real one to try to solo in. They lost a lot of people.
Claim is that he added the middle initial "H" in the army to avoid getting NMI attached to him, but census records don't support this story.
----
From census data :
Eugene was done with school at 14, probably because his dad was injured and couldn't work.
In 1910 he worked as an office boy in an insurance office.
In 1920 he was living alone as a boarder, doing Clerical work.
